Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program

The Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program (CIPP) originated in the UW-GCRC and was approved by the Medical School's Academic Planning Council in May of 1997. The two-to three-year program was funded by an NIH Clinical Research Curriculum Award (K30). The program provides a structured curriculum and support services that will provide investigators protected time, mentoring, and knowledge and skills, that will guide his or her academic success.

The purpose of this program is to provide a didactic curriculum that would 1) train junior clinical investigators to carry out scientifically sound, original, and productive research, and 2) assist them in developing the knowledge, experimental methodology, and communicative skills that will provide them with the motivation and capabilities to make major contributions in their areas of expertise.

Program Highlights

  • Two- to three-year didactic, competency-based curriculum that focuses o n scientific research, study design, biostatistics, the ethical conduct of human research, leadership, and writing and presentation.
  • Individualized career-development plans.
  • Flexible curriculum that meets the investigator's needs and schedule.
  • Access to CIPP personnel's expertise on NIH career development awards.
  • Semi-annual tracking and reporting on scholar's progress to ensure success and completion in a timely manner.
  • Mentorship guidance and review.

Scientific Writing Workshops

Scientific Writing Workshops are offered in the Spring and Fall Semester every year. The CIPP and UW-GCRC jointly sponsor two writing workshops that all CIPP trainees are expected to attend. The Manuscript Writing Workshop is a two-day workshop to enhance the written and oral communication skills of trainees who wish to write, publish and present scientific research. The workshop is designed as a series of discussions and hands-on activities to enhance the writing and presentation skills needed for peer-reviewed manuscripts, research proposals, and oral presentations.
The Grant Writing Workshop is a two-day workshop designed to teach grant-writing skills to trainees who conduct or plan to conduct clinical research.

For more information call (262-9198) in the CIPP Office or visit the CIPP website at www.cipp.wisc.edu.

UW-GCRC "Lunch and Learn" Series

This activity is a monthly series of one-hour discussions that are held on current topics in clinical research. The Lunch and Learns are held in the Spring and Fall semester. Examples of topics include quality assurance in clinical research, data integrity, ethical standards, team approaches in clinical research, marketing, budget preparation, informed consent, FDA audits, and the importance of research training. Monthly attendance ranges from 30-50 and consists of primarily junior investigators, research managers, and study coordinators..

Summer Program for Medical Students

Depending upon available funds, the center will support up to four medical students to participate with UW-GCRC faculty investigators on clinical research projects during the summer. The purpose of this support is to facilitate clinical research projects and to provide clinical research experience for medical students interested in research careers. Applications are received annually and selections are made by the UW-GCRC Program Direction Committee. Applications must provide projected roles in research activities and methods for followup of career outcomes of the students. Successful students will receive salaries consistent with institutional standards for similar appointments, up to the maximum allowed by the NIH NRSA Short-Term Research Training (T35) Grants. Students who are completing their first year of medical school may apply for summer support.
